Chapter 13

Liam

“Liam, Liam, Liam,” I heard my name on repeat as though someone was singing it. A high-pitched voice that I hadn’t yet heard before. Whoever it was, they had distracted me from my dream. I wasn’t ready to wake up yet. It was beautiful, she was beautiful, we were beautiful.

“Liam,” the voice said again. “I don’t know how you managed to drift off during that but it’s time to wake up.”

“Are you sure you didn’t give him a sedative during that,” another woman’s voice sounded, like two sweet birds chirping in the background of my mind. “I just wasn’t expecting that that was how it was going to go. I know you said that it wouldn’t hurt. But I guess I was expecting it to be, you know a little more painful. Especially after he refused the drugs.”

The voice sounded sweet like honey, which made my stomach churn with hunger. But my head felt heavy, and I wasn’t ready to open my eyes yet. I just wanted a moment longer, a moment longer in the bright purple lights with her. I just needed her to turn around so that I could see her face, hear her voice. I bet she sounded like an angel, and her face would have glowed like the skin on the back of her arms. All I was left with was the single sound of her giggle, a glimpse of the side of her face, and her small diamond cut earrings that shone in the light that we stood in.

“You did only play around with his senses, right? the voice said again but I didn’t hear a reply. “Should we have changed his name? It doesn’t feel so, I don’t know, aligned now, I guess. It’s also another thing that’s connected to his past.”

“That will come,” the original woman who was singing my name replied and I heard the other one sigh. Was that her? The girl in the light, the diamond earring, the giggle? I inhaled deeply and snapped my eyes open. Gasping, I sat up, quickly staring at all the strange people who were standing around me, gawking at me with their wide black eyes like they were waiting for me to sing and dance.

“Oh Liam,” said Stella—it was Stella! She came running towards me, wrapping her arms tightly around me. I instantly remembered where I was, what I was doing. That dream was so vivid, for a moment I had got lost in a completely different world, one that felt very different than the one that I was surrounded by. I had completely forgotten that this was my wedding day. My wedding with Stella. I wrapped my arms around her, nuzzling my neck into hers as I looked down at the gold band that was now wrapped around my left finger. They were changing me, they were making everything feel, look, smell different. But I felt the same? Other than getting lost in a crazy dream with someone. A girl. It wasn’t Stella, at least I think it wasn’t Stella.
